Hi, my name is Alex Curry and I am apprenticing at Sweet Trade Tattoo under Adam Considine, we met on my brothers make a wish trip in the summer of 2018. This was definitely a spur of the moment type of thing, a lot of people definitely were caught off guard with my decision of dropping out of school and stopped playing baseball at Olivet to pursue this job. I gave up a lot to go on this path and it’s been a lot of 10-11 hour shifts working a full time job and then coming home and drawing for 4-5 hours but the progress and growth I’ve made not only as a artist but a human being has definitely been worth it.
When I chose to drop out of college, it was a tough decision at first but now that I am a year and a half removed and looking back now, it was not a hard decision at all. Yeah it was fun going out to parties and sleeping in and hanging around playing video games but I just don’t think I would have been able to handle 4 years of seeing the same people, and going to the same parties, and going to the same classes over and over again. Now I get to experience life outside of Michigan and have the opportunity to just get away for awhile and see new faces and travel across the world and just breath new air. I go back to Olivet to see everybody every once in awhile and it’s just a whole lot of sitting around and doing nothing and I now know I would have gone crazy if I stayed.
My goals change every week with tattooing when I first started out, at first I wanted to be in all the magazines and YouTube series, and be on tv. But now I just want to contribute to the art and skill of this job, and I want to contribute to making the lives better of people that come to get my artwork on their skin. I want to walk into a shop and now that I’m going to change peoples lives and have the opportunity to get better each and every day. I want to become a household name wherever I end up tattooing at whether it be in Lahaina, Detroit, Arizona or wherever, I want people to know when they see me setting up their station that they are going to be getting my 100 percent effort and attention, and getting a world class tattoo.
I decided to become a tattooer because I had no idea what I wanted to do in life. I went to school for environmental science, then change my major to graphic arts, then was in the process of changing it again when out of nowhere I was offered an apprenticeship. And on the plan ride home I was racking my brain on pros and cons of doing all this and the pros blew the cons out of the water. I would have been stupid now to do this, I also believed in right place, right time. Especially cause I almost didn’t even get a tattoo while I was in Lahaina, I had just enough money to get a tattoo done by Adam, I had about 3 dollars left over after that tattoo but it was definitely worth it now.
