When I first started this book I did not think I was going to be able to finish it. The main goal of this set of paintings was perfectly replicating each and every design down to the eyelashes of each pinup girl, and the black in each little book and cranny. At first I struggled with this because I was to eager to move on to the next page. I would forget a pupil on an Eagle, or I would miss shading in a pinup girls hair, or my lines wouldn’t be the same width and I’ll admit I got very frustrated throughout the first couple pages of this book.
Once I was able to slow myself down I felt like I really opened a door to myself on what I can be as a tattoo artist, and becoming more confident in myself and now when I show people my paintings I feel like now instead of saying “oh it’s not the best” I’m more comfortable with saying “thank you I’m very proud it. I feel like in this book I was really able to paint and draw more comfortably and not worry about trying to figure out how to paint a certain way. Of course I still want to learn every way I can but having a building block to build off of helped immensely.
I’m very excited to start the next book because now I get to push each drawing and try and mold it into something I would be able to tattoo on somebody. I get to try out new colors and put new faces on pinup girls, and draw eagles differently. There will be something’s that I won’t change because some of these designs don’t need to be changed because they are that timeless. This book was a big step for me in the long run because it helped me develop references in my head of certain designs like roses and pinup girls where I can now pull those out of my head and not worry about being able to give a future client what they want. This book also helped me develop patience and rhythm with myself, it showed me that me personally I’m going to have to take the extra 10 minutes to button everything down and make sure all my lines are straight and connected, and where all my blacks are and should be.
